The vegan diet means no meat, eggs, fish, dairy, or even honey.
Not too long ago, the idea of eliminating all meat and animal by-products in people’s meals is considered highly impractical.

Through the years, however, the interest in this diet has grown exponentially throughout the world.

Today, veganism is a lot more mainstream as more and more people are switching to this lifestyle citing both health and ecological benefits.

Out of all known types of diets, veganism went through a highly controversial phase. So you might have a lot of questions about it, too. If you’re considering going this route, then here are some important pros and cons you need to know.


It’s an effective way to lose weight

This is the most immediate effect of a vegan diet, and the most common reason why people make the switch. It’s a low-calorie diet, even lower than a vegetarian diet (where consumption of fish and other animal by-products such as cheese and eggs are allowed).
That is because in addition to eliminating meat, veganism also eliminates high-fat dairy products. A good proof of this is the massive weight loss transformation of celebrity Simon Cowell.

High in antioxidants

Vegetables, fruits, legumes, beans, and whole grains are all rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are important for freeing cells from free radicals, reducing the risk of many diseases like heart disease, and certain types of cancer.

Improves the good bacteria in the gut

Gut bacteria are important for overall health. A vegan diet is rich in good bacteria, which improves the digestive system. Also, study shows that meals rich in probiotics (good bacteria) improve mental health. You can also get the added benefit from plant-based digestive enzymes.

Sustainable and environmentally-friendly

Many people switch to a vegan diet for their love of the environment and animals. This is pretty hard to dispute as it is not only a humane lifestyle. It has the smallest carbon footprint as well. With the threat of climate change, it is important for practitioners to veer towards making eco-friendly options, whether it is with food, lifestyle, or even driving.


Excessive weight loss can backfire

A quick or sudden weight loss can be unhealthy for most people. Aside from that, many vegans experience a backfire, as restrictive low-calorie diets can cause people to reach out for convenient and unhealthy food choices. This happens especially if you feel, after a period of time, that the diet is too restricting. Cravings can happen and if not managed well, then weight problems might occur.

There are some important nutrients found in meat that you can’t get in a vegan diet, such as Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Zinc, Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Iron, etc. This means you have to plan your diet carefully and supplement with vitamins to avoid nutritional deficiencies.

Finding protein can be a challenge

A healthy and balanced diet includes protein, the building blocks of muscles. And meat and eggs are rich in protein. But as with other vitamins and minerals, there are ways to compensate for protein deficiency, like eating more beans, lentils, nuts, soy, quinoa, and other whole-grain products. Also, there are convenient ways to up your protein intake through vegan-based protein shakes and powders.

As a whole, veganism has its benefits and disadvantages. Carefully analyze these pros and cons to determine if indeed this diet is for you.
