Updated: What Makes a Defender Iconic?
29th November 2011
This coming Monday is no ordinary, depressing Monday. Because this coming Monday is World Land Rover day - 70 years exactly since the first ever Land Rover Series One was launched at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show.
What's happening on world Land Rover day?
You've probably already seen the Land Rover outline in the snow video. Right at the end, Land Rover teases a special event that's happening at 20:00 hours, British Summer Time on Monday evening. They call it a "Special Broadcast".
We think this might be to show off the new Defender. We've already seen it out on the roads for testing. And those pictures were taken months ago now! Surely the 70th Anniversary of the company and on a day marking the launch of the Land Rover that started it all would be the perfect time to show off the all-new Defender?
What will happen during the broadcast?
The Land Rover press release states:
"Land Rover is inviting fans to join the celebrations in a World Land Rover Day online broadcast. It stars the people who helped create the world’s most-loved 4x4s and Land Rover’s pioneering technologies, from its Series Land Rover and Defender origins, to the introduction of the Range Rover in 1970 and Discovery in 1989."
So they're re-capping landmark developments in the company's history! Perhaps we should expect an Apple-like event where after re-capping past successes, they then smoothly transition to a product launch. Make sure you watch the broadcast!
New Defender body styles
In other news, Autocar is reporting that the new Defender will likely have at least two body styles; a hard-top and a pick-up body. Their reasoning is that with Mercedes rebadging the Nissan Navara and calling it the X-Class - there's clearly a strong demand for utility vehicles.
Place of manufacturer
The new Defender will most likely be built in Slovakia, where Land Rover has built a huge, 300,000m² manufacturing facility in the Nitra region. Looking on LinkedIn, you'll see a number of workers based here are working on various parts of the L663 project - the company's internal reference for the Defender replacement.
